Wet sand casting is the oldest technique. Foundry sand is composed of a mixture of refractory sand (silica) and a binder (bentonite) which is moistened and kneaded in a grinder. This mixture will be used to design single-use molds. The part used for reproduction is called the master model. It can be made of wood, resin or metal. The model will be slightly larger than the desired part, in order to take into account the shrinkage of the cast metal during cooling.
The model will be placed halfway into a metal frame filled with sand compacted with a rammer. A second frame prepared in the same way will cover the first to conform to the shape of the part. The model will then be
removed, grooves will be dug in the sand and will serve to feed the model's imprint during casting.
Once the mold is made, we can proceed to casting. Molten bronze (1050°) is scooped from the crucible and poured into the mold. Casting must be carried out at a regular speed adapted to the desired part.
Fettling consists of demolding the cast part by breaking the sand mold. The latter will be repeatedly manufactured for each new creation.
